How this calculator works
The math is simple and never changes: the tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage you choose, the total is the bill plus the tip, and the per-person amount divides that total by the number of people sharing it. If a service charge is already included on the bill, tick the box and enter that percentage so the tool only adds the difference, instead of tipping twice.
The "service quality" selector is a shortcut: average maps to 15 percent, good to 18 percent, and great to 20 percent, which are the common US restaurant bands. You can always type any percentage you like in the tip field. The round-up option is handy for cash payments, where a whole-number total is easier to hand over.
Tips are local, not universal
This calculator does not tell you what to do; it shows you the number for whatever percentage you enter. Whether that percentage is right depends on the country and the service. In many European countries a service charge is already in the price by law, so an extra tip is optional. In Japan it is usually not done at all. The country and service pages on this site start from the local norm so you do not have to guess.

Frequently asked questions
Should I tip if a service charge is already included?
Usually no. If the bill already shows a service charge, that is the tip. Use the "service included" box so the calculator adds only the gap above what is already charged, and avoid tipping the same amount twice.
Can the calculator show the tip in other currencies?
Yes. Change the currency menu and the result displays in that money. The conversion is for display only and uses the percentage you enter; it is not a live exchange rate.
Is there a round-up option?
Yes. Tick "Round up to a whole amount" and the total jumps to the next whole number, which is convenient when you are paying with cash.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
In the United States the usual habit is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This tool calculates on the bill amount you enter, so enter the subtotal if you prefer that convention.
How does service quality change the tip?
The quality selector sets 15, 18 or 20 percent as a shortcut. You can type any value in the tip field instead.
Can I enter a custom percentage?
Yes. The tip field accepts any percentage, so you are not limited to the preset bands.
What is the minimum tip?
There is no universal legal minimum. In places where tipping is expected, 10 to 15 percent is a common floor for acceptable service, and you can leave nothing where tipping is not the custom.
What is auto gratuity on large parties?
Restaurants often add an automatic 18 to 20 percent gratuity for large groups. It is already on the bill, so do not add another tip on top of it.
What is the difference between gratuity and tip?
They mean the same thing. "Auto gratuity" is simply an automatic tip added by the business, common for big tables.
