About GratuityGuide

GratuityGuide is a small set of free calculators for one awkward travel moment: how much do I tip here? We cover the usual countries and services, plus split-bill and reverse-tip tools, so you can see the local norm before you pay.

Every tool runs in your browser. The amounts you type never leave your device, there is no account to create, and we do not track you across sites. We gather typical rates and customs from widely published travel and etiquette guides and keep them deliberately simple.

Tipping is a social custom, not a law. Customs differ by country and change over time, so always check the bill and follow the local norm. GratuityGuide is a planning aid, not an authority on proper behavior.

Behind the site is a tiny editorial team. Calculators and country notes are reviewed by Mara Ellison, a travel-etiquette editor, before they are published and again whenever a reader points out that a custom has shifted. We would rather be a little conservative and clearly labeled than present a single worldwide tip number that is wrong in most places.

Our scope is intentionally narrow. We cover the destinations and service types that travelers ask about most often: full-service restaurants, bars, taxis, hotels, hairdressers, and food delivery across the nine countries in our guide. When a country or service is missing, it means we have not yet verified its customs to our standard, not that the tip is zero.

We keep the project running through optional advertising, clearly separated from the calculators, and we never put a tool behind a paywall. If you find a figure that looks wrong for where you are, the fastest fix is to email us using the address on the contact page.
