Two ways to tip at a bar
At a bar you can tip either per drink or on the whole tab. The per-drink method is common when you pay as you go: about $1 to $2 per beer or cocktail, or roughly 15 to 20 percent on a single drink. The by-the-tab method works when you open a tab and close it at the end: tip 15 to 20 percent of the total. The calculator handles the percentage method; for per-drink, just count the drinks.
If a bartender made you a complicated cocktail or gave great service, leaning toward 20 percent is kind. For a quick beer, $1 to $2 is plenty.
Table service versus the bar
If you sat at a table and a server brought drinks, tip as you would at a restaurant (15 to 20 percent), not the lighter per-drink bar rate. The setting changes the expectation. At a busy standing-room bar, the per-drink or rounded-up-tab approach fits better.
